KAPITI BMX CLUB General information 2008 - 2009 WELCOME to the Kapiti BMX Club. Racing caters for beginners and experienced riders alike, for all ages from preschool children through to adults. Our club days are where all are welcome and newcomers are encouraged to have a go. It’s loads of fun, which the whole family can enjoy.
WEEKLY CLUB RACE DAYS - FRIDAYS. We run races for both club members and casual riders. No racing in Winter. Riders race in general age/ability classes.
Cost - $2 for members; $4 for non members.
General times :-
·
Fridays. Check In around 5:00 / 5.30pm - for most of the season – (ie. when sufficient daylight hours allow it, we race on Friday evenings) Racing starts soon after “Check In” finishes, usually giving 5 races per rider.
Note this is a guide only, times may vary through the season, and length of meetings depend on the weather, support, and participation numbers. Up to date details are displayed above the club house door. You can also practice on the track whenever the club is not running an event or training session.
EQUIPMENT: You need a BMX bike in safe condition, i.e. brakes, tyres, safety pads, etc. Handle bar ends not exposed (ie enclosed grips or plugs), and no other dangerous or sharp objects which may cause injury to yourself or another rider (eg bike stand, chain guard). You also need to dress safely ie. Helmet, shoes, long sleeved top and trousers to protect elbows and knees from grazes incase you fall. They don’t have to be colourful race clothes, just practical protection for elbows and knees. Gloves and elbow/knee pads are optional, but strongly recommended. Note - we sometimes have race bikes for rent.
MEMBERSHIP: Entitles you to all Kapiti club activities below. Current season –1 Jan 08 to 31 Dec 08. Next season - Jan to Dec 2009. Note no activities through Winter - June to August. (see application form for options)
Also includes a BMXNZ licence – this allows for general BMX competition around the country. Different licence categories depending on age and whether entry to major title meetings is required (see application form). ·
Casual riders are welcome at club nights, although becoming a member offers many benefits. ·
You need to be a member to be involved in the following :- (1) 2 x CLUB TROPHY SERIES’ per year - For All Members. This is a key feature of our club’s local activity, and all members are automatically registered into an age/ability class. Riders are graded and race similar speed riders. Advanced and dominant riders move to faster groups to create closer racing. This is a great opportunity for riders to develop and achieve locally. Basic bikes and safety gear as above are fine. Each series runs on the Friday club nights over approx 5 to 7 meetings, where points are awarded on an ongoing basis toward the trophies. Generally one series each side of January. All members have a chance of a well placed trophy in their class – TWICE per season. All riders receive awards. Details and designated race dates in newsletters and at the track.
Note - those who join the club after a trophy series has started, will not score points in that series, but can still race and do training sessions. (2) 2 x “AGE ON THE DAY” trophy meets per year – members to pre enter. These are held as
one day only meetings twice a year to determine the top Kapiti rider in each age. The winners have their name engraved in the club trophy of that age. The grading of age/ability classes does not apply, and this recognizes the true “age” champions.
(3) INTERCLUB / NATIONAL COMPETITION– For more info, see BMX NZ brochure. Kapiti BMX Club will guide and assist any member wanting to compete at other clubs’ race tracks. ie. at one or more events on the BMXNZ National Calendar (calendar available on request). At these events you usually pay about $15 to $20 in advance per class, and as well as offering great racing with lots of fun and excitement, all riders usually get either a trophy, T-shirt, cap or similar. Entries for Interclub / National events can be obtained through our Club.
Note – you can rent our race bikes for these events too if available. (4) TRAINING - We can help members build their skills in various aspects of BMXing. “Sprocket Rocket” training for 8 years and under as supported by BMXNZ. Development of both beginners and advanced riders, over 8 years old. Members will be notified of any sessions. (5) PRIZES - Only members are eligible for spot prizes and certificates at our Club Race meetings.
